It is with profound sadness that the International Society for Antiviral Research (ISAR) has learned the passing of Prof. Dr. Michael P. Manns, a worldwide recognized leader in Hepatology. Professor Manns longly and prestigiously served as Director of the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology at Hannover Medical School, held leading positions in the German Liver Foundation (Hep-Net) and the European Association for the Study of the Liver, & was many time awarded for his inspiring contributions to clinical research and medicine. Professor Manns was in particular active in the field of viral hepatitis and notably played an important role in the clinical implementation of revolutionary antiviral strategies against the Hepatitis C virus. More recently he actively promoted the research for novel antivirals against the neglected hepatitis Delta virus, while maintaining his long-lasting interest for a Hepatitis B cure.
ISAR acknowledges his prominent contributions to the antiviral research field and would like to express its sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
His legacy will surely inspire the next generation of Hepatologists, interested in antiviral therapies against all kinds of liver-tropic viruses.
